Information about Birhor Tribe - The Birhor are a small hunter-gatherer tribe found in Jharkhand and neighboring areas of West Bengal. They live in small settlements (Tanda) comprised of Saal leaf houses called Kumbas. These are situated at the edge of the forest and they sometimes interact with the villages exchanging their catch or gathering from the forest. They have expert knowledge of the medicinal plants of the forest (Ethnobotany). They claim that the pre-historic rock art which Jharkhand is famous for was painted by their ancestors. They belong to the Proto-Australoid group of tribes and speak a Mandarin language but with a unique ‘click’ compared by linguistic authorities with a similar trait of the Dravidian Brahui language. They are animist by religion worshiping stones and natural formations such as mountains (Lugu).
